JAHAN LOH

Jahan Loh's works read like a graphic design panel. His paintings are carefully cropped stylized depictions of erotica. In one of the works, a woman, naked, lays awaiting, in apprehension, of her partner's approach. In another work, the side profile of a woman-on-top shows that she is ecstatic and signals that she is about to climax. So what would have been censored erotica, now looks like suggestions -  tame and passable as one of the covers of the magazines that we can find on the racks in Singapore newsstands. You could either say that Jahan is really clever in getting around the censorship and making everything palatable for show and collection, or you can accuse Jahan of having compromised, of not having gone far enough.
