Art
finds a home at Sentosa
Artists
have found a new place where their creative juices can
flow freely. Sentosa
Artists Village
is now home to five
resident artists: Milenko
Prvacki, Tay Bak Koi, Tan Kay Nguan, Teh Chan Kerk and Max
Kong Kum Chuen.
This
new art studio and gallery on Sentosa is the location
where these men create and showcase their art works for
the enjoyment of Singaporeans and foreign visitors alike.

The objective of SAV is
consistent with the National Arts Council (NAC)
Arts Housing Scheme, one of the Council’s many
initiatives aimed at fostering a vibrant local arts scene.
The Arts Housing Scheme focuses on providing art groups with
practice and administrative space at subsidised rent.

The idea of
setting up an Artists Village on Sentosa was first conceived
by Sentosa Development Corporation in mid-1999. In August
the following year, individual artists, art institutions and
art societies were invited to register their interest for
this project. After two rounds of registration and
interviews, five resident artists were eventually
selected.

Located
along Artillery Avenue (next to Sentosa Horse Riding Centre), the
quaint building set amidst the tranquil and serene surroundings,
provides a conducive spot for the artists’ creative expression,
and so work began to convert the building’s interior into five
individual studios and one grand gallery.
And SAV was born,
opening its doors on 1 March 2001. The centre has since witnessed
three solo and two group art exhibitions involving the resident
artists as well as various guest artists, including Low Puay Hua,
Goh Beng Kwan, Ang Ping Ping and Belynda Chua. SAV’s resident
artists intend to hold one major joint exhibition on an annual
basis. |
